A tragic accident on the Mumbai-Pune Motorway on Saturday afternoon killed a woman and injured 18 people. It incident took near the Adoshi tunnel in the Khopoli area of Raigad district.

According to police, a container truck lost control after a brake failure and slammed into 18–20 vehicles, including luxury cars like BMWs and Mercedes. The driver was taken into custody, but tests confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol. The injured were rushed to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai, where one woman died during treatment.

Crash triggers traffic jam on busy highway

The crash occurred near Datta Food Mall, just after the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section. It caused a massive pile-up on one of India’s busiest motorways, where daily traffic often crosses 1.5 to 2 lakh vehicles, and even more on weekends. Traffic was stuck for nearly five kilometres, causing long delays for travellers.

Vehicles crushed, emergency teams rushed to the spot

The impact of the accident was huge—at least three vehicles were completely crushed, and many others were badly damaged. Emergency teams arrived quickly to treat the injured and begin clearing the damaged vehicles.

Traffic diverted, police investigating

To take stock of the traffic jam, authorities have diverted some vehicles to alternate routes. Police and local officials stayed on the scene to help control the situation and begin an investigation into what caused the crash.
